Anti-Inflammatory Recipe of the Week

In September of 2015 I started Dr. Weil's Anti-Inflammatory Diet after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Endometriosis.  I share a new recipe each week to help those who may need to modify their eating habits to better their health.
Food is medicine - You are what you eat

You can find out more about the Anti-Inflammatory Diet by going here

Say it with me -
Roasted
Potato
Vegetable
Salad

...yum!!

Aberdeen's Kitchen nails it with this recipe.  It's so fricking good.  When I make this I double the batch, add a meat side for my guys and then go to town on this as my dinner.  Then, oh, the then is so important.  THEN I save the leftovers (after I fight off my husband and middle son for it) and use it as my side for breakfast with eggs.  Sweet peas people, it's AH-MAZE-ING!

LOOK AT THAT!

Ok, here is the recipe for the Southwest Roasted Potato Vegetable Salad.

And, here, are my modifications - I use canned corn, skip the ancho chili pepper (we don't do spice), and half the dill required (it's pretty strong for my taste buds).  Just my 2 cents, but you do you.

Now, go forth, and eat great food.  Your dietary limitations should not limit you from enjoying great food.

DIY Recipe of the Week {Chemical Free Home}

What's in your cabinets?

Why am I passionate about getting the yuck out of my home?  Because I don't want to be in constant pain because my Endo is flaring up.  I know, it's pretty selfish, but it's the catalyst for change in my home.  For me, essential oils are another rug on my Healthy Living Ladder.  It's something that I'm choosing to do to help my family.
You can read more about that here

Did you know that 26 seconds after exposure that chemicals are found in measurable amounts in the human body?

Did you know that the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health studied 2,983 ingredients in our products at home—and found 884 toxic ingredients?

Why DIY when there are perfectly acceptable options available for purchase?  In this case I say, SAVE YOUR TIME!

I shared a little about my obsession with Dr. Bronner's here and I'm going to share a little tip for cleaning your bathrooms with this amazing soap in addition to a scouring powder.  It's all good stuff, folks, I swear.

First, the specifics on these two products -
Bon Ami - Only contains Limestone (calcium carbonate), Feldspar, Biodegradable cleaning agents (alkyl polyglucoside), Soda Ash (sodium carbonate), Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate).  I pick mine up at Target.  You can find out more about Bon Ami here.

Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds - IS AMAZING!  I love this stuff.  I use it as dish soap, laundry soap (when I run out of my Young Living Laundry Soap), and as a deep cleaner when mixed with Bon Ami.  I pick up my Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds at the Vitamin Shoppe You can find out more about Dr. Bronner's by going here.

So, how do I use these two products to clean my bathrooms?  First I spray down my shower, tub, and tiled areas around there with water.  Then I shake the Bon Ami powder all of  the place.  I let it set for about 10 minutes, which is roughly the time it takes me to fill a small bucket with hot water and 1 tablespoon of Sal Suds, and grab my scrub brush on a stick and head back into the bathroom.  I dip the scrub brush into the soap mixture and then scrub down the tiled walls, bathtub and shower enclosure.  It gets all of the the hard-water build up off.  It's pretty amazing.  Also, this duo cleans toilets like nothing else!

To find out how these two products (and anything that you have in your cabinets) rate on the EWG website, go here.  Bon Ami get's an "A", so does Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds!

I'm all for DIY'ing to avoid chemical yuck, but I'm also about saving my time.  These are two great products that I can purchase at the store that do just that.  I encourage you to take a moment and go to the Environmental Working Group's website and check to see what your cleaning products are rated.  From there, make a decision, an active decision, to do better if any of your products have scored a "C" or lower.  There are better options out there.  Do you research and then experiment.  And, like I did, it's okay to start off slow as you are swapping the products out. If you are reading this you are likely the "gatekeeper" to your home.  You decide what crosses the threshold of your home.  You can do better for your and your family.

Hey Let's Grow {Update - aka I'd die if I were responsible for growing my own food to sustain on}

*I am participating in the Monsanto Hey Let's Grow program as a blogger this year.  Materials in this post were                 provided by Monsanto.  This is a sponsored post.  The opinions in this post are my own.*

So, I took advantage of the "warm" weather the swept through the Chicagoland area and got a bit too ambitious when I put out every single flat of veggies & flowers that I was trying to start in my front room since February.

And, then this happened

Dude!  Seriously?

Ugh!  And, you know what...I laid in bed on May 2nd, under all of my warm and fluffy blankets and through "Hmmm...it's going to get offly low in the 30s tonight, maybe I should bring those flats in."  And my body refused to move from under the mountain of warmth and fluff.  So, my laziness killed off months of nurturing and work.

Of the survivors are lettuce, cauliflower, and 1 bell pepper start.

So, here I am owning up and coming to the realization that I would die if I needed to grow my own food to sustain from.  *shaking head in disgust*

Excuse me while I run to the large box home improvement store to get my starters to plant directly into my garden.

Hey Let's Grow {Sad Trombone Update}

*I am participating in the Monsanto Hey Let's Grow program as a blogger this year.  Materials in this post were                 provided by Monsanto.  This is a sponsored post.  The opinions in this post are my own.*

I often have a romanticized idea of gardening, self sufficiency, and the such in my mind.

"Oh, it'll be super easy"
"Oh, won't it be cool to grow our own {-----}"
"Doing it yourself is always better"

And then, a thing like a frost warning is ignored and now weeks of prep and hope are gone.

{insert sad trombone}

So, this is totally my own doing.  See, I was all snuggled up in bed late one evening and thought to myself "Hmmm...it's going to get offly low in the 30's tonight...I think they will be okay."  "They" being the flats of starters that I had moved from indoors to my covered front porch.

Guess what?  I WAS WRONG!  I awoke to frost on my shingles and my stomach dropped when I saw it.  I also swore, a lot.  I was hoping that some would come back, but nope.

I'm left with lettuce, cauliflower and one pepper.

I've transplanted the lettuce to the gutter grower that my husband had made for me.

And, the cauliflowers and one pepper are still chugging along.  They will go into the ground in about a week.

And, for the rest?  I'll be hitting up the local hardware chain store to get the rest of my veggies.

Lesson well learned.  Also, I am such a lazy gardener.  *shaking head*

CBD {Wax}

There are many rungs on my Healthy Living Ladder - MANY RUNGS.

The use of CBD is just another one of those rungs on my Healthy Living Ladder that I have found exceptionally helpful for me.  That's the key, it works for me.  I don't know if it'll work for you.  But, I'll give you the information that I have and you can make that decision.

To find out what CBD is, click over to this post
To see how I choose to use CBD, click over to this post
I shared a little about the legality of CBD here
I shared how I use CBD tincture here
I shared why I use CBD salve here

I shared why I use the CBD transdermal patch here
I also shared why and how I use CBD Gum here

In addition to using 250mg CBD with a dosing of 1.0ml I use CBD wax in a vape pen, not on a daily basis, but as needed.  This week, it's the perfect example of why I choose to utilize this product.  I'm leaving for a road trip to Texas on Saturday morning where I'll be staying with my dad who has been diagnosed with cancer, for two weeks this month and 3 weeks next month.  I am trying to cram three weeks worth of commitments, chores, tying up loose ends....etc, into this week on top of my normal routine and commitments.  I'm just a little stressed out.
I only use the vape wax at home and not around other people.  I have three children, and though CBD or smoking are not illegal, it's a personal choice to use this product and I do so discretely.

I purchase my CBD wax from a local vape shop that actually carries a really good brand.  This is super convenient as I do not have to order this product online.  When I do use it, I have roughly ten inhales of the vape and I'm good to go.  I feel more relaxed, not as frazzled, can focus a bit more on the tasks at hand.

I have found, in general, my routine and regular use of CBD has increased my quality of life on a daily basis.  Mentally and emotionally, I am better.  I am not anxious or stressed, which prior to starting the use of CBD would often times result in my taking that anxiousness or stress out on my family.  Not the case anymore.  Also, I am sleeping better.  Often times, though, I find that my regular and routine use of CBD just needs a small added increase to handle situations that in the past seemed to incapacitate me (such as large gatherings or family).  I view my use of CBD as how I'm able to lead a happy, joyous and free life.  I'm much happier.  It's amazing.  It's been a total game changer for me.

Gluten Free Spiced Hot Fruit Bake

Oh yes, you read that correctly.  And, it's amazing.

Cotter Crunch suggests using it as a topping to pancakes or waffles.  To be honest, I eat this with my steel cut oats and it's oh so good!  I also eat it all by itself.  Seriously, it's that good!

You can find the recipe here.  Here are some of the modifications that I made to this recipe so that it's safe for me to eat - I used a 1/4 cup of coconut sugar, honey, omitted the butter altogether and doubled the coconut oil (you may need to add a little more, melted, to get the right consistency with the spices and sugar), then I greased the casserole dish really well with spray olive oil.

Now, go forth, and eat great food.  Your dietary limitations should not limit you from enjoying great food.

DIY Recipe of the Week {Chemical Free Home}

Did you know that 26 seconds after exposure that chemicals are found in measurable amounts in the human body?

Did you know that the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health studied 2,983 ingredients in our products at home—and found 884 toxic ingredients?

Let's talk SHOWER BOMBS.  So, it's spring right now and pretty much everyone in my family is going to be suffering from some sort of sinus yuck quite soon.  Healing baths, steam showers, and warm water soaks are nothing new in my family.  I grew up with them.  My mom would get these amazing smelling funny liquids from the German Apothecary shop every year to help support our family in healthy ways.  I still have some of those funny liquids with German labels.  I can't read German, but I know what to do with those funny liquids.

In our home we take showers.  But, man, would I love a soaker tub.  Just saying.

Anyway, showers - how do you utilize the supportive powers of essential oils while taking a shower? With Shower Bombs.  These also make wonderful gifts - just a little FYI there.

  • 1 cup Baking Soda (may need a little more, so keep that box out)
  • 1/3 cups distilled water
  • 25 drops essential oils
In a bowl add the baking soda and water together.  Mix well until you have a paste consistency.  Add your essential oils and incorporate it into the paste mixture.  If the mixture is too runny, add one tablespoon at a time of baking soda and mix until you get a paste consistency again.  You want to mix until you have a thick paste consistency that is hard to mix.  Keep adding more baking soda, as needed, until you get that consistency.  It should take roughly  5 minutes to achieve this consistency while stirring continuously.
Next, you are going to grab your favorite silicone shaped molds and add the baking soda mixture to the molds.  Then you are going to set them out to dry for 24 hours.

Here are some of my favorite essential oil blends to add to the baking soda and water mixture to make shower bombs -
My favorite "wake me up" blend is lemongrass + orange
My favorite "relaxing" blend is cyprus + ylang ylang
My favorite "respiratory" support blend is eucalyptus + peppermint + lemon

Listen to Your Mother {Chicago} Grand Finale

I seriously cannot believe that this is the very last show!

*sigh*

But, I guess all great things must come to an end.  I guess...right?

I'm so sad about this, you guys.

Today I will be carpooling into the city with fellow alumni.  I will get to stand on stage for a final all cast photo.  I will get to sit in the audience and experience the absolute wonder that is LTYM for the very last time.

Oh, don't get me wrong, there will be hugs and smiles and laughter and tears and connection.  It'll be that weird mix of happy and sad.  And, it will be awesome!

And then, it'll be over.

You can follow along today by visiting my social media accounts.  I'll be posting throughout the day, live from the grand finale show of LTYM Chicago.

DIY Diffuser bracelet

How can you take the wonderful scent and amazing power of essential oils with you while not lugging around a bottle with you?

I like the option of the diffuser bracelet.  My two older boys and myself all have diffuser bracelets that we wear.  While my oldest likes to put Peppermint essential oil on his, my middle some likes to put Frankincense essential oil on his.  I prefer more earth tones like Cypress essential oil.

I purchase my beads from a local bead shop in town.  I would suggest using a stretchy cord to thread the beads on (make sure to use multiple tight knots to secure closed).  Also, and this is super important, make sure that you are using natural lava beads with no coating (otherwise the essential oils will not absorb) AND make sure that your lava beads are not dyed (otherwise once you place essential oils on it, the color will bleed out onto your skin).

It's super easy to make, is compact, and can travel with you.

In addition to using 250mg CBD with a dosing of 1.0ml I use CBD chewing gum nearly on a daily basis.  If I find myself frazzled or I feel scattered or rushed I'll chew on a piece of CBD gum.  I consider it a nice buffer dosage with 10mg of CBD.

I get my gum from Canchew, though there are a few different places where you can get CBD gum from, I like theirs.   It has a pleasant minty taste.  It is hard gum, so you need to let if soften for a minute in your mouth before you start chewing.  I like the convenience of the gum as well.  I keep a packet in my purse at all times and it's very discrete to use in public.

This is a relatively new recipe to my rotation.  We've had it three times so far and we will be having it again tonight.  This will be my entire dinner, but for my guys I'll be adding some grilled chicken.

The Loaded Veggie Salad With Chickpeas and Black Beans by Pip and Ebby gets an A+ from me and my entire family AND my husband thinks that it would make an awesome salad to bring to a summer potluck.  It's always a good thing when you can bring a dish that everyone else will enjoy and that is safe for you to eat as well.

Now, go forth, and eat great food.  Your dietary limitations should not limit you from enjoying great food.
